Pejman Bakhtiary, MD

Dr Pejman Bakhtiary is an ophthalmologist and cornea specialist certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Pamela J. Bekendam, M.D.

Pamela Bekendam is a board-certified general ophthalmologist who has spent nearly two decades working to manage and treat patients with common eye conditions as well as complex eye diseases. In her role at Pacific Eye Institute, she has successfully performed thousands of cataract surgeries and has dedicated her time to provide surgical eye care for disadvantaged individuals as a volunteer with Good Samaritan Hospital, La Romana, Dominican Republic and Tanzania. Dr. Bekendam is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Loma Linda University medical center in Loma Linda, California – the same institution where she earned her medical degree in 1994.

Christopher Blanton

Christopher L. Blanton, M.D. Refractive Surgery ~ Cornea Specialist Dr. Blanton is a fellowship-trained cornea specialist and has performed over 30,000 refractive procedures. He is the former Chairman of the American Academy of Ophthalmology panel on Refractive Surgery Knowledge Base. Dr. Blanton has been selected to be a Medical Monitor and Global Medical Advisor for AMO/VISX Corporation making him responsible for training, certifying and advising hundreds of doctors in laser vision correction. Dr. Blanton has been invited to train other surgeons in Europe, Asia, North and South America. Peter D. Bekendam, M.D.

Dr. Peter Bekendam currently serves as Medical Director for Pacific Eye Institute and has been a part of our team since 2016. He is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and specializes in cataract and anterior segment surgery, glaucoma procedures, and comprehensive ophthalmology. Over the course of his 15+ year career, he has performed over 15,000 cataract procedures in the greater Inland Empire area. In addition, he is excited to expand his surgical practice to include operating out of the practice’s new High Desert Surgery location in Apple Valley, starting in the summer of 2022. In addition to his role as a practicing ophthalmologist, Dr. Bekendam currently serves as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, California, where he earned his own Medical Degree in 2004. Dr. Bekendam is the Founder and President of Sight Restoration International, a non-profit organization which works to bring vision-restoration surgery to patients in developing countries. He was also honored to be elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society while in medical school.

Andrea S. Ching, M.D.

Dr. Andrea Ching has proudly served patients at Pacific Eye Institute since 2002. Her passion is building lasting relationships while providing the highest quality clinical care. Dr. Ching is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. She specializes in cataract and anterior segment surgery, offering advanced premium lens implantation as well as micro-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). Other clinical interests include comprehensive ophthalmology, dry eye management, and glaucoma treatment. With a steadfast focus on improving her patients’ lives through better sight, Dr. Ching provides customized treatment solutions suited to every patient’s unique lifestyle. Dr. Ching has been published in peer-review journals and is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Daniel D. Esmaili, M.D.

Dr. Daniel D. Dr. Esmaili is an accomplished author, researcher, and presenter. Samuel C. Kim, M.D.

Samuel C. Dr. Kim has completed a fellowship in Vitreoretinal diseases and surgical training at the combined Retina Group of Washing/Georgetown University Hospital/Washington Hospital Center, a fellowship known to be one of the top clinical and highest surgical volume programs in the country Having recently joined the team at Pacific Eye Institute, Dr. Kim is looking forward to providing his patients with the highest quality of surgical and clinical care to patients in the Inland Empire and beyond. Dr. Kim is an internationally experienced doctor, actively involved in medical missions in Kenya, Zambia and China. Dr. Kim has been published in multiple journals and has presented at many national meetings including at the annual meetings of American Society of Retinal Specialists. Julie King, MD

Dr. Julie King is a board-certified ophthalmologist and corneal specialist who has been helping patients improve the quality of their vision and maintain optimal eye health in the Inland Empire since 2005. Dr. King offers treatment for advanced cataract surgery using premium lens technology, corneal conditions such as Keratoconus and Fuchs’ corneal dystrophy including partial thickness corneal transplantation, ocular surface disease, dry eye disease, along with general ophthalmology eye care including diabetic eye disease and glaucoma. Dr. King strives to provide her patients with the best available surgical and medical treatments for their eye care needs. Dr. King completed her corneal fellowship at the renowned Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA where she continues to serve as Clinical Faculty of Ophthalmology helping to train the next generation of physicians, a position she has held for nearly 15 years. Dr. King is an accomplished researcher, with work appearing in several leading scientific publications. She also has a long-standing interest in helping provide medical care services to the underserved having done so in Papua New Guinea, Central America, and Haiti where she was proud to have served as Medical Director for the Haiti Mission Outreach Clinic for more than a decade.

Abraham Park, M.D.

We are pleased to have Dr. Abraham Park join the Pacific Eye Institute team. Dr. Park is a board-certified ophthalmologist, fellowship-trained in glaucoma. He specializes in various minimally invasive glaucoma procedures as well as traditional glaucoma surgeries. Dr. Park is 100% patient-focused and takes the time to ensure every patient fully understands their diagnosis and the various treatment options for the best outcomes. Dr. Park wants to be a true partner in his patients’ eye care and looks forward to working with the Inland Empire community. Dr. Park completed his undergraduate schooling at the University of California, Berkeley then completed his medical school and ophthalmology residency at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Dr. Park then completed a fellowship in Glaucoma at the Boston University/Boston Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Firas M. Rahhal, M.D.

Dr. Firas M. Rahhal received a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Pennsylvania, then received his MD from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He completed an Ophthalmology Residency at Cornell University Medical Center in New York City and subsequently a two-year fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery and uveitis at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center. After fellowship, Dr. Rahhal returned to Cornell University as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and was appointed the Director of the Retina Service, staying in that position for five years.

Richmond E. Roeske, M.D.

His particular area of interest in combining his over 20 years experience with refractive and LASIK surgery with refractive cataract and premium lens technology to produce positive outcomes using the most advanced and current technology. Dr. Roeske is a compassionate doctor who truly cares about his patients. He has been named a TOP Doctor as voted by his peers in independent surveys through Consumers’ Checkbook Guide to Top Doctors, for ten consecutive years. He has treated thousands of patients, has been awarded numerous honors and published several investigative, medical and surgical management abstracts in prestigious professional journals of ophthalmology. Ryan G. Smith, M.D.

Dr. Ryan G. Smith is a board-certified ophthalmologist and corneal specialist who has been working at Pacific Eye Institute since 2020. After his residency in Ophthalmology at Stanford University, Dr. Smith was recognized as one of the top 10 residents in the country by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He then completed a fellowship in Cornea, External Disease, Refractive Surgery, and Complicated Anterior Segment Surgery at the University of California-Irvine. Dr. Smith is excited to provide state-of-the-art cataract surgery including implants that give you both near and far vision, advanced full-thickness and partial thickness cornea transplants surgeries (DMEK, DSAEK, PKP), and LASIK surgery to the Inland Empire, utilizing cutting-edge technology to deliver the best possible results while always treating patients like family. Dr. Smith also believes in making a positive impact globally as well as in his community. He has completed mission trips to Belize and Nepal with the Stanford Belize Kids program and the Himalayan Cataract Project, the latter a nonprofit organization that has revolutionized the way ophthalmology is practiced in the developing world. He is motivated to pass along his knowledge to the next generation, a passion he pursues by teaching residents and medical students. Jeffrey J. Tan, MD

Dr. Jeffrey J. Tan is a board-certified retina specialist with particular interest in treating vitreoretinal diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal detachments, uveitis and more. Dr. Tan has emerged as a leader within the vitreoretinal community of Southern California and beyond. He is an accomplished novelist, has published numerous articles in medical journals, and has earned several prestigious awards including the Vit-Buckle Society Best Fellow Surgical Award two years in a row. Edward Yung, M.D.

Dr. Edward Yung is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in comprehensive ophthalmology with sub-specialization in glaucoma. Dr. Yung has been a part of the Pacific Eye Institute team since 2017 and provides many services including, but not limited to: glaucoma consultations, laser and surgical management of glaucoma, cataract surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, and comprehensive adult eye care. Dr. Yung has a wide range of academic interest in glaucoma, including evaluation of innovative drug treatments, minimally invasive surgical devices, devices for continuous intraocular pressure monitoring, and innovative optic nerve imaging technology. His ongoing interest is the investigation of optic nerve head blood flow with Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography as it relates to the pathophysiology of glaucoma. He is the author and co-author of numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, continuing medical education courses, and presentations at national ophthalmological conferences. Dr. Erika Saucedo is a board-certified ophthalmologist and cornea specialist. Dr. Saucedo performs complicated cataract surgeries (including advanced technology intraocular lenses) and pterygium and corneal transplant surgeries (including lamellar corneal procedures). She is certified on numerous laser platforms. She is a native Southern Californian and completed her undergraduate work at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Sanchez is fluent in Spanish and has excellent interpersonal skills, receiving both the Compassionate Doctor Recognition Award and Patients’ Choice Award for the years 2011- 2015.

She brings 3+ years of field experience to the practice, adding expertise with comprehensive eye exams as well as treatment and management of ocular diseases and conditions. Dr. Liao received her Doctorate in Optometry from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Worcester, MA. To further her education and training, she completed a residency in ocular disease and primary eye care at the Boston VA Hospital in Brockton, MA. She has been caring for patients at Pacific Eye Institute since 2016 and today is the supervising OD. Nicolas Biro, M.D.

We are pleased to introduce Dr. Nicolas Biro, the newest Board Certified, fellowship trained ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery specialist at Pacific Eye Institute. Dr. Biro specializes in surgery of the upper and lower eyelids, the tear drainage system and the orbit. He also offers rejuvenation services, including cosmetic fillers and botulinum toxin injections for wrinkle reduction. Dr. Biro is a best-in-class surgeon accepting new patients and he’s ready to assist you with your oculofacial needs. Dr. Biro is passionate about teaching, recently overseeing oculoplastic resident education at two residency programs in New York. While there, he covered two Level 1 trauma centers, repairing fractures and complex lacerations of the face. Dr. Biro has authored multiple publications and presentations, he has donated his time as a medical volunteer in the Dominican Republic and India, and is fluent in English, Spanish, and French.
